BAOBAB: THE AFRICAN “SUPERFRUIT” : Frequently Asked Questions Answered

baobab1

The Baobab (Adansonia digitata) fruit, which largely grows in Africa is believed to poses remarkable health benefits. Owing to its medicinal and nutritional benefits, baobab has been used for the past centuries in Africa for different functions. The baobab tree is multipurpose with tender tubers, roots, seeds, twigs, leaves, fruits which are all edible. In the UK and US, the fruit was unknown until recently when evidence started emerging regarding its health benefits. The fruits had not been recognized for many years until a decade ago when the European Union and FDA Approved Baobab powder to be used as food and beverage.

This exotic fruit owes its health benefits to its exceptionally high vitamin C content. If you really think that Oranges are the best sources of Vitamin C, think again. A serving of oranges supplements your body with just a tenth of the Vitamin C provided by Baobab fruit. Various parts of the Baobab have been traditionally used for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, insect repellant, immune-stimulant and pesticidal properties. In most African communities, Baobab has been substituted for the imported western drugs, which most locals can’t afford.

Production of Baobab powder.

The baobab fruits powder naturally forms inside the hard-shelled fruit of the tree.  Baobab powder is produced from the Baobab fruits which are about 6 to 8 inches long.  The fruit pulp bakes in sun for six months after which turns its color from green, velvet-like coating to a brown hard coconut like a shell.  The fruits are handpicked or collected and taken for grinding.

Once the outer hard shell is ground, a white-ish pulp fruit jump packed with highly valuable nutrients is produced.  The pulp can then be ground to form a white powdery substance that is 100 % moisture free hence the birth of Baobab powder.

baobab4Why is it a superfood?

A superfood is considered to be a food that is high in at least three key nutrients. The nutritional content of baobab claims six key nutrients as based on EU-approved Nutrient Reference Values;

It’s high in:

Vitamin C (>24mg/100)

Magnesium (>112.4mg/100g)

Calcium (>240mg/100g)

Potassium (>600mg/100g)

Iron (>4.4mg/100g)

Fiber (>6g/100g)

    Comparison With Some Foods
Compared with       Per 100 g      serving size             per serving

Vitamin C              Orange                   50mg      Medium orange 70 g        35 mg

Dietary Fiber         Broccoli                  2.6g        1 cup chopped (91g)            2.4 g

Iron                       Spinach                  2.7 mg       Cup (30 g)                         0.8 mg

Magnesium           Bananas                 27 mg        1 medium banana (110g)    32 mg

Calcium                 Eggs                      50 mg          Medium egg (35 g)       17 mg

Potassium              apricots             1162 mg          2 dried apricots (15 g)     174 mg

Based on the above comparisons, 10g servings of baobab powder is the equivalent to eating:

  • As much calcium as 2 eggs
  • As much Vitamin C as half an orange
  • As much fiber as nearly 2 cups of broccoli
  • As much iron as nearly a cup of spinach
  • As much magnesium as half a banana
  • As much potassium as 2 dried apricots

Studies have shown that this superfood contains approximately 33% of our daily Vitamin C needs. Furthermore, the powder contains a plenty of phosphorus, potassium, carbohydrates, fibers, proteins, Vitamin B, Magnesium, and antioxidants.

Baobab powder also contains high dietary fiber content than any other fruit. Due to this, most researchers have concluded that the baobab fruit pulp is made up of 50 % fiber and that its fiber is higher that of orange or apricots. Its antioxidant levels are exceptionally high, doubling its nearest competitor, Acai Berry.

Pronunciation

You may be wondering how Baobab is pronounced….. Worry no more because we are going to teach you how it is pronounced both in the northern and southern Africa accent.

In South Africa, it is pronounced as “bay-o-bab” (they use three syllables.).  In Nigeria or West Africa, it is pronounced by using two syllables “bau-bab”.

In Chinese you will say it like you were to say bow to a queen or king, you know “bow down to the queen” and say it twice in a row.

In the UK and the US, it is pronounced using two syllables as in Nigeria.

baobab2

How does it taste?

The fruit has a tart taste with some bit of sour flavor.  The taste of the magical powder is awesome! Baobab powder has a sweet, delicious and citrusy taste that is associated to tangy sherbet, bearing the legendary name of the tree. The refreshing taste that is slightly tart making it an excellent enhancer of flavor, if combined well with both savory and sweet recipes. Its pectin content gives baobab a thick and creamy mouth feeling making it an ideal functional ingredient in most applications and recipes from juices, smoothies, yogurts, ice-cream to nutrition bars, cereals, and baked foods.

For those who have tested tropical lemonade, the taste is closely similar.

To make the baobab drink sweeter, you may decide to add a teaspoon of honey.

How does it smell?

Baobab powder is often pale in color. On crushing the hard shell or opening a baobab powder container, you will be greeted by a sweet smell of freshly pressed fruits that can be described as caramel pears with a subtle tone of the grapefruits.

Why is Baobab good for you?

The benefits of Baobab powder is long and the list does not seem to end soon as scientists are continuously researching and discovering further benefits of this superfood.  We are going to provide a breakdown of in-depth nutritional benefits of the baobab powder as in:

 Baobab powder as an Antioxidant.

Baobab powder has also the highest antioxidant level or Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) values of approximately 140,000 μ mol TE per 100g. Antioxidant helps to prevent an oxidative stress that results from free radicals which are known to cause cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and premature aging.  According to Lab tests by Atacora on Essential’s product, Baobab has been found to have an integral antioxidant capacity 37 times more than that of oranges!!

Lowers blood pressure and improves blood circulation

An important mineral that is found in baobab is Potassium. It is for this reason that the powder is well known for its numerous heart health. Potassium, being a vasodilator, has the ability to ease the strain on the cardiovascular system as it is capable of dilating blood vessels and arteries and because of this,  it aids to increase the rate of blood flow and prevents the overworking of heart. Another advantage of lowered blood pressure is its significance in fighting several cardiovascular afflictions like strokes, atherosclerosis and heart attacks. A recent study conducted by a researcher at the University Of Maryland shows that increasing the potassium intake serves the purpose of lowering the blood pressure for person’s deficient of the same.

Vitamin C’s role besides improving blood circulation also helps in the production of collagen and elastin. Collagen is a structural protein, that plays a significant part of the connective tissue and elastin is responsible for muscular elasticity. These proteins improve circulations and help keeps the vein toned up and healthy. Those with circulatory issues such as venous insufficiency and varicose veins can add baobab pulp powder into their smoothies, this will significantly do justice to your veins.

Based on a research by Goinheim et.al Baobab has strong cardio-protective effects against the ISP-Induced oxidative stress in rats. The rats which were treated with the baobab fruit powder were found to have no congestion in the blood cells and there were no incidences of infiltration of the heart’s inflammatory cells. Thus indicating the baobab fruit had a significant role in promoting healthy hearts and cardiovascular system.

baobab4

Regulate blood sugar and helps in weight loss

Various studies have been conducted on the significance of the polyphenol content of the Baobab powder in relation to its effectiveness in reducing the glycemic index in high starch foods thus preventing any glucose spikes in the blood. This studies found out that there is a significant reduction in the rapid conversion of digestible starches into sugars in the blood when carbohydrates were consumed together with Baobab powder.

Being high in polyphenols, Baobab powder is also able to regulate the release of sugar from starchy foods into the bloodstream, thus reducing their conversion to glucose. Furthermore, it also aids in reducing the visceral fats (these are fats stored in body organs around the abdomen) and also improve blood cholesterol level. Baobab fruits promote the gradual release of glucose by slowing down starch digestion.

Besides that, a diet rich in Vitamin C increases the amount of fat burned during a workout session. Vitamin C helps in the production of Carnitine compound, which encourages the body burn more fat instead of storing it.

According to a study by Oxford Brookes University, the African fruit, baobab can help regulate the blood sugar level. Baobab being 34% rich in soluble fibers, is able to slow down the rise of blood glucose levels and thus prevent what is known as sugar spikes. A later study by the same university further reveals that baobab significantly minimizes the rate of sugar release into the bloodstream after digestion. Therefore, for those following low GI diet, or for those with type 2 diabetes, baobab is important.  Meals with low glycemic index helps people lose weight by reducing cravings, increase satiety, thus keeping their insulin levels in check.

Baobab as an anti-inflammatory

Baobab powder inhibits LOX. Lipoxygenase products mediate a series of inflammatory diseases, such as allergic rhinitis, asthma, neurodegenerative disorders, and inflammatory bowel diseases. Research on baobab fruit indicates that they are exceptionally excellent at inhibiting the activities of 15-LOX8.

According to a research by Oxford Brookes University, the polyphenol-rich baobab fruit helps to reduce glycemic response and digestion problems exhibited by other anti-inflammatory agents. Baobab also possesses characteristic resembling a string anti-inflammatory, phenylbutazone. Every use of 800mg per 1 kg weight body of an extract of Baobab pulp fruit has a similar effect to 15 mg per 1 kg of phenylbutazone.

Baobab powder also acts as an analgesic or simply pain relieving element. It can be compared to Aspirin due to its high levels of sterols, saponins, and triterpenes.

baobab2

Help in digestion

As mentioned previously, the Baobab Fruit powder contains 50% of fiber. A report by National Health Service (NHS) dated 2012, indicates that despite a growing consumption of fiber diet in the world, over 80 percent of people in Europe do not have enough of it.  Baobab contains both Soluble and insoluble fibers. Soluble fibers or mucilage dissolves in water and enters the digestive system to help reduce the fat Cholesterol levels. The insoluble fibers are also known as cellulose fibers plays a key role in helping ease digestion of food. It also reduces constipation, as traditionally used by ancient African communities to reduce diarrhea.

 Baobab as prebiotics

Baobab has notably high content of dietary fibers. Half of the fiber content is soluble, making it an effective pre-biotic. The mucilage fibers (soluble fiber) in Baobab pulp fruits provides a suitable environment that stimulates the growth of useful prebiotic bacteria’s namely; lactobacilli and bifidobacteria in the intestinal tract.  This improves digestion, allowing a person to absorb more nutrients from the ingested foods.

Skin care

Baobab powder contains the highest antioxidant levels than any other fruit in the world. According to a famous international skin and facial expert and blogger, Abigail James, antioxidants help to maintain a smooth and a young skin by preventing the overproduction of free radicals by our bodies.

Free radicals damage collagen in the facial skin leading to a dry skin characterized by wrinkles and premature aging.  In the ancient African cultures, parents removed rushes and maintain a smooth skin of their children by bathing them in water mixed with Baobab roots.

Additionally, Baobab oil which is obtained from Baobab fruit seeds has Vitamin C (6X that of orange) and this helps to maintain skin elasticity.  It also has an additional Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids that are responsible for maintaining skin membrane texture.

baobab3Pregnancy

When it comes to nutrient-rich foods to incorporate into your diet during the pregnancy period, then Baobab powder should never miss in your diet.   Baobab powder has supernatural supplements and nutrients that are not only good for pregnant mothers but also promotes a healthy development of the fetus.

The high vitamin C contents in the powder play a vital role in immune-boosting of both the mother and baby which is crucial during the nine months period. Vitamin C also aids in making of collagens which are used to replenish dead skin and hold the joints and tendons together. Collagen is the largest protein found in our bodies.

Vitamin C in Baobabs plays a crucial role in dealing with nausea that is experienced during morning sickness by about 70% of women while pregnant.  In a research by ( Merkel, 1952) ,  women were given a 25mg of vitamin C combined with 5mg of Vitamin K per day and a marvelous result were obtained as women reported a great improvement in the symptoms of morning sickness after three days.  Other women reported a total disappearance of these symptoms.

Australian Aboriginal women used the bark from baobab trees with the aim of enlarging their birth canals, thus reducing pain during delivery. In some cases, the powdered baobab stimulates lactation. A study done by Antika and Obizoba in 1994, shows that baobab treats milk allergies and galactosemia. Baobab contains more protein content than cow’s or human milk, thus proves that it is highly nutritious.

Iron Absorption

Baobab fruit pulp significantly improves the iron status of individuals with low blood levels.Baobab is an excellent source of Vitamin C which significantly enhances iron absorption, thus the presence of Vitamin C in baobab makes it an excellent source of bio-available iron.

Boosts the Immune Functions

Vitamin C boosts our immune systems and prevents our body against illness.  Approximately, 2-3 teaspoons of Baobab powder contributes to 33% of our daily Vitamin C needs!!…isn’t it amazing? Baobab powder has been found to have the highest concentration Vitamin C for up to 300mg per 100 gram. We human beings, unlike other animals, do not generate or store Vitamin C and thus we need a regular intake to retain the minimum body requirements. Baobab is a rich source of vitamin C which our body cannot easily produce for itself. Vitamin C significantly supports the immune system, keeping you healthy strong by boosting the defenses against any infections and diseases.

With all the listed benefits, you can personally conclude what it means when we say this fruit qualifies as a superfood.  It is recommended that you can incorporate Baobab powder by adding at least 2 teaspoons of the powder to your daily meals.  You can either sprinkle it into porridge, Fruits or yogurt. Alternatively, bake it into cakes or bread or even blend it with ice creams.

Some of the benefits:

Chlorella and the human brain

Chlorella is brain food. It contains all the essential nutrients that the brain need to boost memory. Chlorella is a rich source of nucleotides and nucleosides which provide the building blocks, RNA needed for normal functioning of the brain such as learning and memory. Besides that, Chlorella is a rich source of Phosphatidylserine (PS), responsible for rejuvenating and revitalizing the brain cell membranes by improving its overall integrity. Studies,(1) indicate that supplementations of PS improve memory and learning capabilities. It has also been demonstrating to lighten depression as well as delaying memory loss especially for persons affected by Alzheimer’s diseases. Its high contents of antioxidants also aid in neutralizing the free radical damages hence protecting the brain cells. The CGF present in chlorella can significantly suppress the corticosteroids stress hormones in the human blood.

Chlorella, Blood Pressure and the Heart

Several studies prove that supplementations of chlorella can significantly improve hypertension and lower the serum cholesterols levels in the blood in persons who consumed it while improving the overall quality of their lives. This is attributed to chlorella’s ability to improve the pliability and elasticity of the arteries, hence normalizing the blood pressure. Its rich content of carotenoids, chlorophyll and phospholipids combats the free radicals while reducing the oxidative damages which often lead to arterial plaques and lesions build-ups, the causative agents of arteriosclerosis. Its high magnesium content confers proper cardiac functions, stroke prevention, and regulation of blood pressure as well as for both contraction and relaxation of the heart muscles.

Chlorella and Detoxification

In Japan and Korea chlorella is widely used for detoxification functions, since it’s capable of binding and removing the heavy metals, and toxins from the blood tissues. This attributed to its high content of chlorophyll, chlorella can cleanse and purify the blood.Chlorophyll is the green blood of the plants, with a similar structure to hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood. This will help keep the bloodstream free from toxins and environmental waste, substantially increasing the resistance to common infections and illness in human beings.

cl5

Chlorella, the Immune System and Cancer

Chlorella is an excellent booster for the immune system. Its CGF content increases the Colony Forming Units, enhances interleukins (IL), tumor necrosis Factor (TNF), gamma-interferon production in the human body. The Gamma-interferon activates the NK cells which target cells of the tumor, protecting the body from infections.IL provides messages for the leukocytes which fight against viruses and tumors whereas TNF inhibits the growth of viruses and parasites as well as killing the tumor cells. Chlorella increases the Interferon levels by stimulating the activity of macrophages and T-cells, hence it enhances the ability of the immune system in combating pathogens and foreign particles.

Several scientific studies and surveys (1,2,) show that people who develop cancers have low levels of beta-carotene and vitamin A in their blood. Beta-carotene and Vitamin A improves the immune system, hence will help in the treatment and prevention of cancers. Several scientific studies (1,2,3  )demonstrates that chlorella fights cancer cells through the production of Interferon as induced from its complex polysaccharides in its unique cell wall.

Chlorella also helps the body to rebuild white blood cells and improves its count thus improving the fatigue induced by chemotherapy in cancer patients. Chlorella is helpful when used as a functional part of the broad-based nutritional organized and oriented physician-guided `programs.

Chlorella and Body Energy

Chlorella improves vitality and boosts the body energy. Chlorella can replenish the oxygen supply in our bodies by substantially increasing the amounts of hemoglobin in the blood, possibly due to the iron, protein and chlorophyll content which is significant in the synthesis of hemoglobin. A good supply of oxygen and adequate nutrient supply, energy and vitality are restored. Being a whole food makes the effects of Chlorella in the human body long-lasting.

cl6

Chlorella can reverse and treat the following conditions;

  • High Blood pressure and Hypertension
  • Cancers
  • Depression
  • Arthritis
  • Liver damages and liver disorders
  • Intestinal Ulcers
  • Alzheimer’s diseases
  • Common cold, flu and Infections
  • Asthma
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Diabetes and hypoglycemia
  • Various degenerative diseases

Will Spirulina Help You During Exercises and Gain More Muscles?

sp1

Spirulina and Protein in Our Bodies

The protein comprises a chain of amino acids that are essential for our bodies in the cultivation of hair, nails, skins, muscles and internal organs. Nutritionists advise that if you are training or exercising to achieve a lean body and perfect muscle building, then it is necessary to consume at least one gram of protein per half a kilogram, of your body weight daily. Protein makes 20 % of the human body, thus it is not only used for muscle building but also to maintain the body’s immune system and synthesis of DNA. Whenever you consume protein, it is broken down into amino acids, which are the building blocks of our bodies. Thus, protein rebuilds and repairs every cell of our bodies.

Unlike fats, proteins are not readily stored in our bodies, thus it needs regular consumptions throughout the day. Quite often in many foods such as meat, milk and beans, the proteins are not easily absorbed, thus this is where spirulina would come as an easy supplement for proteins for most athletes. With over 65% of the total protein weight as compared to only 22% of beef, this natural sea vegetable superfood offers a plant-based protein that is easily digested and rapidly assimilated and absorbed into the human body. Its proteins are biologically complete, meaning that they provide all the essential amino acids, that is, Leucine, Lysine, Isoleucine, Phenylalanine, Methionine, Tryptophane, Threonine and valine in the right proportions.Besides that, Spirulina also has ten of the total non-essential amino acids.

sp2

Athletes and bodybuilders need to ingest food that is dense in nutrients, specifically proteins to perform at their best and maximum potential. Spirulina provides a clean energy due to its high chlorophyll content, extends speeds and endurance and increases the stamina during exercises as well as the mental agility. It also contains high doses of vitamins, mineral, antioxidants and natural forms of polyphenols, easily available and digestible for the human body thus helps prevent diseases, reduces blood pressures, stops feelings of hunger, reduces the blood cholesterol, helps in weight loss, improves digestions, balances the blood sugar levels, removes toxins and much more other functions. Spirulina is also highly alkaline hence it helps regulate an athlete’s internal body Ph.

Spirulina is easily digestible, believe it or not, thirty minutes after ingestion, it is already absorbed into the body. Why is it so?

Spirulina is a single-celled organism, meaning that its cell walls are made up of soft fibers, thus its amazingly high digestibility rate.

sp3

Spirulina and Physical Workouts and Exercises

During sessions of intense training most athletes experience an anemic deficit of iron, with much more clinical symptoms such as muscle fatigue and exhaustion. Spirulina is highly rich in bioavailable iron. In a study done by Moorhead K et.al on Spirulina nutrition, Spirulina has 2300% more iron than spinach. Thus daily consumption of a few grams of spirulina significantly decreases and eradicates the iron deficit symptoms eventually increasing the optimal physical activity eventually leading to more muscle gains.

A study on the effects of supplementation of Spirulina on various athletes showed that spirulina induced significant increments in fat oxidation and exercise performance. Athletes felt much more bouncy, less fatigue after the performance of physical load, improved sleep quality, and the recuperation processes much faster with much more endurance while performing various exercises. Healing and repairing of the body and muscle cells and tissues help to build it up more. Consumption of Spirulina increases the levels of the Myosin, the contractile protein thus increasing the synthesis of the muscle protein.

Another research conducted on athletes showed that the time of fatigue after a two-hour run was significantly reduced after supplementation of the spirulina in comparison to a placebo.

sp4

Ingestion of spirulina increased the rate of fat oxidation over 10 percent. Intense exercises often produce excessive free radicals and this excessive free radical causes damages of tissue cells. Spirulina works by restoring, rejuvenating and build up the muscles due to its antioxidant properties. The high content of antioxidants is responsible for fighting oxidative stress and reduces oxidation. This is attributed to the chlorophyll, carotenoids, beta-carotene, phycocyanin, xanthophylls and superoxide Dismutase antioxidants pigments. Specifically, C-phycocyanin demonstrated an anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective and neuroprotective effects which were quite beneficial for the athletes by fighting off the free radicals by inhibiting the productions of the inflammatory signals molecules.

Spirulina is also nitrogen based thus it helps an athlete’s body get more nitric oxide that allows more oxygen and blood to get into the bodies, muscles and brain cells and tissues. Its alkalinity and high iron and chlorophyll content profile help brings oxygen to our cells easily such that you won’t easily suffer from muscle soreness due to excessive lactic acid productions after an intense exercise period, thus helping you build more muscles instead of damaging it.

sp5

Conclusions

Consumption of Spirulina after your workouts will help you burn more fats, get toned faster, making you achieve a strong, slim and lean perfect body. This is because its high content of amino acids, the building blocks of muscle building, which are important and crucial in reducing soreness and repairing of any muscle and tissues damages. Consumption of spirulina after exercises will not only get protein easily absorbed into the body, but it will also help you cut hunger and suppress appetite, thus helping you lose weight as well. Always supplement your diet with Spirulina since it is nature’s form of whole food supplementation, which will enrich your body with adequate and balanced nutrients at the right proportions.

The standard dose of spirulina should be at least four to six 500mg of tablets daily. However for muscle performance and synthesis you might increase your dosage up to eight to ten tablets, that’s equivalent to 5grams of Spirulina. Spirulina has been proven to be non-toxic for normal human consumption if they are from a natural source of water that is free toxins and waste materials. Thus, ensure that you buy spirulina from a reputable health and food store. Always consult your doctor before consumption of any spirulina, just in case you might have an allergic reaction or any existing autoimmune disease.

We wish you the best in your body and muscle building exercises! Do remember to supplement your diet with Spirulina to achieve your goals easily and faster!

BAOBAB: THE AFRICAN “SUPERFRUIT”

baobab4

In most African communities, Baobab has been substituted for the imported western drugs, which most locals can’t afford.

baobab3

Production of Baobab powder

Why is it a superfood?

A superfood is considered to be a food that is high in at least three key nutrients. The nutritional content of baobab claims six key nutrients as based on EU-approved Nutrient Reference Values;

Its antioxidant levels are exceptionally high, doubling its nearest competitor, Acai Berry.

baobab1

Pronunciation

You may be wondering how Baobab is pronounced….. Worry no more because we are going to teach you how it is pronounced both in the northern and southern Africa accent.

In South Africa, it is pronounced as “bay-o-bab” (they use three syllables.).  In Nigeria or West Africa, it is pronounced by using two syllables “bau-bab”.

In Chinese you will say it like you were to say bow to a queen or king, you know “bow down to the queen” and say it twice in a row.

In the UK and the US, it is pronounced using two syllables as in Nigeria.

baobab5

We are going to provide a breakdown of in-depth nutritional benefits of the baobab powder as in:

baobab6

Thus indicating the baobab fruit had a significant role in promoting healthy hearts and cardiovascular system.

baobab7

It can be compared to Aspirin due to its high levels of sterols, saponins, and triterpenes.

baobab8

It also has an additional Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids that are responsible for maintaining skin membrane texture.

baobab2

Pregnancy

In a research by ( Merkel, 1952), women were given a 25mg of vitamin C combined with 5mg of Vitamin K per day and a marvelous result were obtained as women reported a great improvement in the symptoms of morning sickness after three days.

The POWERFUL SUPER- BERRY; ACAI BERRY

acai

Acai berry is a slightly dark purple (sometimes blue) berry which originated from the Brazilian Amazon rainforest. Considered to be one of the most nutritious and powerful superfoods in the world, Acai has been used for over a century due to its legendary healing properties by the Brazilian natives. As a matter of fact, Acai berry got its mainstream popularity after it was featured on Oprah Winfrey’s Top 10 Superfoods due to its outstanding health benefits as a powerful and potent longevity promoting superfood.

acai2

Why Is Acai Berry A Superfood?

The potent health benefits of Acai berries go beyond the rich supply of antioxidants. Acai contains high levels of anthocyanin that help protect the human body from harmful free radicals which often develop due to the exposures to UV rays and metabolic processes in the body.

Acai berries have a rich supply of omega fats, offering a healthy dose of unsaturated fats. Its content of Omega 3, 6 and 9 fats are proven to lower the LDL and maintain the HDL cholesterol levels.

Besides that, for every 100grams of the berries, it supplies almost 45grams of fiber, thus its fiber content may help combat cases of colon cancers and stomach problems, as well as improving regularity within the small and large intestines.

Acai berries may be termed as a superfood due to its high protein and amino acid content. It contains at least 19 different amino acids.

Another significant feature of Acai berries is its content of the plant sterols (B-sitosterol, sigmasterol, and campesterol), which helps to keep the heart healthy as well as helping in digestive functions. Its high assortment of minerals and vitamins further promotes its superfood status, because Acai richly supplies Vitamins B1, B2, B3, C and E. For every 100grams of Acai, a person diet is supplemented with 1000IU of Vitamin A. Those who consume the Acai berries, also benefit from a rich supply of calcium, potassium, copper, zinc, and magnesium.

Acai has an extremely high ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) score, which measures the capacity of antioxidants in foods. Its ORAC value is more than 6000.Also impressive are its copious amounts of phytonutrients, keeping most researchers and scientist on their toes as they try to catalog and identify the numerous health benefits of Acai berries. Particularly Acai is a rich source of anthocyanin’s flavonoids.

acai3

What are some of the health benefits of Acai Berry?

  • Based on a recent research, Acai Berries help produce and regenerate stem cells. Basically, stem cells are the embryos of each cell. They help us heal faster and rejuvenate by becoming any cells that need repair in the body, for instance, stem cells become connective tissue cells, muscle cells or even nerve cells. The more our bodies produce stem cells, the more it regenerates and the longer we live.
  • The high amounts of plant sterols, especially the B-sitosterol helps in the inhibition of the absorption of excessive cholesterol, especially from the animal sources within the GI tracts. Besides that, its high content of dietary fiber helps indigestions and prevention of constipation.
  • In a recent study by the University of Florida, Acai extracts triggered a self-destructive response up to 90% of the tested leukemia cells. This was attributed to its rich content of antioxidants. The high levels of antioxidants may possibly prevent or slow down the development of cancers. The anthocyanin present in Acai prevents the proliferation of the free radicals by stabilizing the free radicals. Anthocyanin also exhibits chemopreventive, radiation protection, and anti-inflammatory and vasoprotective properties. Besides the high anthocyanin levels, the Omega-9(Oleic acid) prevents cancer-causing oncogenes, from being induced to actions.
  • Offers anti-inflammatory properties especially those that suffer from cases of arthritis and rheumatism. Its high levels of antioxidants provide protection against oxidative damages by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX 1 and 2) activities and the activation of the NF-kB pathways. Its high content of antioxidants slows down or reverse any aging processes that are related to any oxidative damages. Free radicals are often responsible for wear and tear of our bodies which often lead to aging.
  • Acai promotes a healthy heart. This is attributed to the contents of the plant sterols as mentioned above. The presence of the fiber content also provides a positive impact on the cholesterols levels in the blood and cardiovascular system.
  • It also helps improve the overall immune system of a person. Acai is a rich source of Vitamin B, C, and E which are significant for a healthy immune and strong immune system. Some research also shows that the antioxidants in the Acai Berries have the ability to enter the body cells in functional form and thus performs the oxygen-quenching function in minimal doses, hence promoting a healthy immune system.
  • Acai berries also contain high amounts of amino acids the building blocks of the human body thus it promotes muscle performance, endurance, strength, and energy production.
  • The Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids help to lower the LDL while maintaining the beneficial cholesterol, the HDL. They combat heart diseases by increasing the developments of healthy cells. Besides that, the omega fatty acids are significant for body regeneration and maintenance of a healthy nervous system.
  • Acai berries may help improve boost memory and cognitive functions. Oxidative stress and inflammations are the leading causes of cognitive problems. Acai has protective effects on the brain cells through its suppressing biological activities of the anthocyanin which degrades the cellular integrities. In some cases, Acai berry has been termed as an adaptogen, meaning that it could disrupt any hormonal imbalance by raising the cortisol levels, hence reducing the stress levels in a person.

Are there any side effects of the Acai Berries?

There are no major known side effects of acai berries except for the people who have pollen allergies or are sensitive to any other type of berries. However, if consumed in moderate portions, Acai berries are safe to consume.
